How much forage do you actually need for winter? Is your horsebox safely within its payload? How much should you budget for livery? How often should the farrier be coming? And what does a horse actually cost to keep once all the little expenses are added together?
We create practical guides, calculators and planning tools for horse owners, loaners and anyone thinking about taking the plunge into horse ownership.
Our approach
There is plenty of equestrian information online, but finding a straightforward answer can be surprisingly difficult.
A simple question can quickly turn into conflicting advice, American figures that do not apply in the UK, outdated information or pages that never quite get around to answering what you searched for.
StableMetric takes a different approach. No twenty-paragraph introduction before getting to the point.

Our tools help estimate horse weight, calculate horsebox payload, plan winter forage, work out hay costs and budget for horse ownership. Where a useful calculation can replace guesswork, we would rather build the calculator.

They are written for a UK audience and, where the subject calls for it, checked against guidance from organisations such as the British Horse Society, World Horse Welfare, Blue Cross, the RSPCA and official UK government sources.
We separate general guidance from hard rules. Horses are individuals, and a typical figure is a starting point rather than automatically the right answer for every horse.

Where rules differ between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, we aim to make that distinction clear rather than treating the UK as though every rule is identical.
Editorial standards
We want StableMetric to be accurate, but we also want it to be usable.
That means translating technical guidance into something you can actually apply at the yard without stripping away the important context.
We use reputable sources where possible and regularly review guides and tools as information changes. If something varies between horses, yards, manufacturers or individual circumstances, we will say so.
Responsible use
StableMetric's calculators are designed to help with planning and everyday decision making. They cannot account for every horse, vehicle, yard or situation.
An estimated horse weight is still an estimate. A forage calculation still needs to be considered alongside body condition and grazing. A horsebox payload calculation depends on the figures you enter being correct.
